Why your art prints come out blurry — and how to fix it
Soft, fuzzy, or pixelated prints almost always come down to one thing: not enough pixels for the print size you ordered. Here is how to diagnose and prevent it.

The blurry print problem is almost never the printer
When a print arrives looking soft, the first instinct is to blame the print lab. Occasionally that is justified — printing errors do happen. But in the vast majority of cases, the blurriness was baked into the file before it was ever sent to the printer.
The underlying cause is almost always the same: the source image did not have enough pixels to fill the ordered print size at the required DPI. The printer stretched a low-resolution file across a larger physical space, and the stretching is what looks blurry.
How print resolution works
A digital image is made of pixels. When you print it, those pixels are spread across a physical area. DPI (dots per inch) describes how many pixels fill each inch of the printed page.
At 300 DPI — the standard for high-quality prints — a 2400 × 3000 pixel image fills exactly 8 × 10 inches:
3000 px ÷ 300 DPI = 10 inches
If you only have 1000 × 1250 pixels but order an 8 × 10 print, the printer is forced to output at only 125 DPI. At that density, pixels are large enough to see individually — which is exactly what "blurry" looks like in print.
The three most common causes
1. Canvas was created too small
This is the most common cause. You drew in Procreate, Photoshop, or another app but used a default canvas size without checking whether it meets print requirements. A 1080 × 1080 canvas looks perfectly sharp on screen but only prints at about 3.6 × 3.6 inches at 300 DPI — not enough for a standard print.
Fix: Start new artwork at the correct canvas size for your intended print. Use the Canvas Size Finder to get the right dimensions before opening a new document.
2. DPI was set to 72 instead of 300
Some apps default to 72 DPI (screen resolution). If you created a canvas at "A4 at 72 DPI" you have only 595 × 842 pixels — far below the 2480 × 3508 needed for A4 at 300 DPI. The file looks fine on screen because your monitor displays those same 595 pixels at screen size, but the printer stretches them across the full A4 sheet.
Fix: Always check DPI in your canvas settings before drawing. For art prints, set it to 300. For large wall art, 150 is acceptable.
3. The file was upscaled
Upscaling — increasing pixel dimensions in Photoshop or another editor — does not add real detail. It adds interpolated pixels that are mathematically guessed from surrounding colours. An upscaled file looks slightly better than the raw low-resolution version, but still significantly worse than artwork created at native high resolution. Print labs often describe this as "soft" rather than "blurry", but the result is the same.
Fix: Go back to the original source file and re-export at the correct canvas size. If you no longer have the layered source, redraw the artwork at the correct size from scratch.
How to check your file before ordering
Run this check before every print order:
- Open your image in Photoshop, Affinity, or another app.
- Go to Image Size (or Document Setup) and read the pixel dimensions.
- Enter those pixel dimensions into the Pixels to Print Size Calculator.
- Set DPI to 300 and check whether the resulting print size meets your target.
- If the result is smaller than your order size, reduce the print size or fix the source file.
This check takes under 30 seconds and prevents paying for a blurry print.
Why print labs do not always warn you
Most print labs accept any file you upload and print it at whatever resolution results. Some show a low-resolution warning during upload, but many do not — they assume you know what you are doing. The order goes through, the print is produced, and the blurry result arrives a week later.
Checking resolution before upload is always the seller's responsibility. Even platforms with upload warnings often allow you to override them and proceed with a low-resolution file.
