Print Resolution Guide for Artists
This guide helps you choose the right resolution before sending artwork to print, so details stay crisp and colors reproduce cleanly.
Print quality benchmarks
- 300 DPI: premium fine art prints and close viewing distance.
- 240 DPI: strong quality for medium-size posters.
- 150 DPI: acceptable for large prints viewed farther away.
Simple sizing formula
Print size (inches) = pixel dimension / DPI
Example: 4500 x 5400 px at 300 DPI = 15 x 18 inches.
Preflight checklist before export
- Confirm final print size and required DPI with your print vendor.
- Keep layered master files for last-minute crop and bleed changes.
- Embed color profile (sRGB or Adobe RGB based on print workflow).
- Add bleed if required for trimmed formats.
- Avoid last-minute upscaling beyond reasonable limits.
Useful calculators
Use the DPI/PPI calculator, pixels to print size tool, and bleed and safe margin calculator for accurate print prep.
