Encaustic and beeswax painting: history, materials, and how it's done

Encaustic is one of the oldest painting technologies still practiced today — molten beeswax and pigment, fused layer by layer with heat. Here is what it is, where it came from, and how to actually work with it.

What encaustic painting is

Encaustic (from the Greek enkaustikos, "to burn in") is paint made from purified beeswax and a small amount of damar resin, melted together into a workable medium, pigmented, and applied hot with a brush or tool. As each layer cools it hardens almost immediately, so the painter fuses it to the layer beneath with a heat gun, iron, or torch before adding the next — otherwise the layers simply sit on top of one another instead of bonding.

The result is a surface with real depth: translucent layers stacked over each other, texture that can be carved back into, and a low-sheen, slightly luminous finish that neither oil nor acrylic quite produces.

A short history

Encaustic is not a modern invention. The technique's most famous surviving examples are the Fayum mummy portraits — lifelike funerary portraits painted in encaustic on wood panels in Roman Egypt, roughly the 1st to 3rd century AD — many of which still show vivid color and fine brushwork nearly two thousand years later. Ancient Greek shipwrights also used a related pitch-and-wax process, called ganosis, to seal and decorate ship hulls, which is likely where the painting technique originated before moving to portraiture and panel painting.

The technique fell out of common use for centuries — it is slower and more equipment-heavy than oil — before a 20th-century revival led by artists including Jasper Johns, who used encaustic for texture and layered imagery in a way that reintroduced the medium to contemporary painting. Materials you need

  • Encaustic medium — beeswax and damar resin, either premixed or combined yourself (roughly 8 parts beeswax to 1 part damar resin crystals by weight is a common starting ratio).
  • Pigment — dry pigment, oil paint, or premade encaustic pigment sticks/blocks melted into the medium.
  • A heated palette — a griddle, hot plate, or dedicated encaustic palette kept around 180–200°F (82–93°C) to keep the medium liquid while you work.
  • A fusing tool — a heat gun (safest and most common), a small handheld iron, or a butane micro-torch for tighter control.
  • Natural bristle brushes — synthetic bristles melt in hot wax; natural hair holds up to repeated heating.
  • A rigid panel — cradled wood panel or hardboard, gessoed or absorbent-ground, never stretched canvas.

Setting up a safe workspace

Keep the workspace ventilated — an open window and a fan pointed away from you is usually enough for normal working temperatures. Watch your palette temperature: wax starts to smoke and release irritating fumes above roughly 200°F (93°C), well before it catches fire, so a simple surface thermometer on the palette prevents both the fumes and the fire risk. Never leave a heated palette or a torch unattended, and keep flammable materials — solvents, paper towels, palette wraps — away from the heat source.

The core process

  1. Melt your medium on the heated palette and stir in pigment until you reach the color you want.
  2. Brush a thin layer onto the panel — it will set almost immediately as it hits the cooler surface.
  3. Fuse the layer with a heat gun, moving in steady passes until the surface goes glossy and slightly liquid — this is what actually bonds it to what is underneath.
  4. Let it set for a few seconds, then repeat with the next layer and color.
  5. Once you have the depth you want, carve, scrape, or incise into a layer while it is still workable to expose color underneath, or leave the final fuse as the finished surface.

Every layer needs its own fuse. Skipping this step is the most common reason encaustic paintings delaminate — the layers were never actually welded together, just stacked.

Texture and mixed media

Encaustic is unusually forgiving for mixed-media work because the wax itself is an adhesive. Thin paper, dried botanicals, photographs, and fabric can be embedded between layers and sealed under a fused coat of clear or tinted medium. Oil paint and oil sticks can be worked into a cooled surface for fine detail, since oil is compatible with wax; water-based media should go on top only, as a final layer, since water and wax do not bond.

Substrate: rigid panel only

This is not optional. Cooled beeswax is hard but brittle — it has essentially no flex — and any surface that moves, including stretched canvas, will eventually crack the wax along the stress lines. Cradled wood panel or hardboard, sealed with an absorbent ground so the first layer of wax keys into the surface, is the standard and only reliable substrate for encaustic work.

Durability, care, and heat sensitivity

Encaustic is a genuinely durable medium — beeswax does not yellow or become brittle with age the way oil films eventually can, and the Fayum portraits are the two-thousand-year proof of concept. The tradeoff is heat: a finished encaustic painting can soften, mark, or bloom (a hazy white surface effect) if it sits in direct sunlight or a hot vehicle above roughly 150°F (65°C). Store and ship encaustic work the way you would anything wax-based — cool, out of direct sun, wrapped so nothing presses into the surface.
