DPI for Print vs Web

Use around 72 to 96 PPI for web graphics and 300 DPI for high-quality print. Large posters can often print well at 150 to 240 DPI because they are viewed from farther away.

How to use DPI / PPI Calculator

For print: enter your image's pixel width and height plus the target physical print size (in inches). The calculator divides pixels by inches to give you DPI. If the result is 300 or above, your file meets the standard high-quality print threshold. Below 150 DPI usually means visible softness at close viewing distance.

For screens: enter your display's pixel resolution and its diagonal measurement in inches. The calculator uses the Pythagorean theorem to find the pixel diagonal, then divides by the physical diagonal to give PPI. Above 200 PPI is generally considered retina-class; below 100 PPI shows individual pixels at normal reading distance.

DPI and PPI are often used interchangeably in everyday language, but they measure different things — DPI describes ink dot density in physical printing, while PPI describes pixel density on a screen. Worked examples

Example 1: PPI of a 27-inch 2560×1440 monitor

  1. Screen resolution: 2560 × 1440 pixels
  2. Screen diagonal: 27 inches
  3. Pixel diagonal (Pythagorean theorem): √(2560² + 1440²) = √(6,553,600 + 2,073,600) = √8,627,200 ≈ 2937 px
  4. PPI = 2937 ÷ 27 ≈ 109 PPI

Result: A 27-inch 2560×1440 display has approximately 109 PPI

Example 2: Effective print DPI for an 8×10 print from a 2400×3000 px file

  1. Image pixel dimensions: 2400 × 3000 pixels
  2. Print size: 8 × 10 inches
  3. DPI (width): 2400 ÷ 8 = 300 DPI
  4. DPI (height): 3000 ÷ 10 = 300 DPI

Result: 2400×3000 px at 8×10 inches = 300 DPI — ideal for high-quality print

Example 3: Checking if a 1500×2000 px file works for a 5×7 print

  1. Image pixel dimensions: 1500 × 2000 pixels
  2. Print size: 5 × 7 inches
  3. DPI (width): 1500 ÷ 5 = 300 DPI
  4. DPI (height): 2000 ÷ 7 ≈ 286 DPI

Result: Effective DPI ≈ 286–300 — acceptable for most print labs

Understanding DPI vs PPI

PPI and DPI are related but used in different contexts. PPI describes pixel density on displays, while DPI usually refers to print output density. Understanding the difference is critical before buying screens, exporting artwork, or sending files to print. This calculator supports both workflows: screen checks and print checks. What is a good DPI for printing?

The standard is 300 DPI for high-quality prints that will be viewed up close. For large posters or wall art viewed from distance, 150-240 DPI is often acceptable. Lower DPI (72-96) is fine for web-only images.

How do I find my monitor's PPI?

You can calculate it using this tool by entering your monitor's resolution (horizontal and vertical pixels) and diagonal screen size (typically 24", 27", etc.). Use your monitor's spec sheet or measure the diagonal with a ruler to get accurate results.

Why does 300 DPI matter for print?

At 300 DPI, individual pixels become invisible to the human eye, creating smooth gradients and sharp details. Below 150 DPI, prints may appear pixelated or blurry. Going above 300 DPI adds file size without visible quality gains.

What if my image doesn't have enough DPI?
