How to make your own oil paint sticks
Oil paint sticks — pigment bound in oil and wax, cast into a stick you draw with directly — are simple enough to make in a home studio with three ingredients and a double boiler. Here's the actual process.

An oil paint stick is exactly what it sounds like: pigment carried in an oil-and-wax binder, cast into a solid stick instead of packaged in a tube. You draw and paint directly with it, the way you'd use an oil pastel, but the underlying chemistry is closer to a tube of oil paint that happens to have set solid. Commercial sticks are convenient, but pigment selection is limited to whatever a manufacturer chose to carry — making your own means any pigment you can buy as dry powder becomes a stick.
What you need
- Dry pigment — artist-grade pigment powder, not craft-store colorant.
- Linseed oil — the standard binder; walnut or safflower oil work too and yellow less over time.
- Beeswax — pellets or a block, grated or chopped so it melts evenly.
- A glass slab or thick glass palette — for working pigment into paste.
- A palette knife or muller — to grind and work the paste.
- A double boiler or a bowl set over hot water — never melt wax over direct heat.
- Molds or liners — silicone molds, cut-down tubes, or paper liners you peel away once set.
- A kitchen scale — for repeatable ratios batch to batch.
The process
- Make the pigment paste. Put dry pigment on the glass slab and drizzle in linseed oil a small amount at a time, working it in with the palette knife or muller. Keep adding oil gradually until you have a smooth, dense paste — roughly the consistency of thick peanut butter — with no dry, chalky pockets left. Rushing this step is the most common reason finished sticks turn out grainy.
- Melt the wax gently. Chop or grate the beeswax and melt it in a bowl set over — not touching — barely simmering water. Direct heat scorches wax and can make it flash-ignite; a water bath keeps it well below that risk the whole time.
- Combine off the heat. Once the wax is fully liquid, take it off the water bath and stir in the pigment paste. Work quickly and stir until the color is completely uniform — the mixture should still pour, not be watery, and not be so thick it won't move.
- Pour into molds. Pour immediately, since the mix starts setting as it cools. Fill molds or liners in one continuous pour where you can, to avoid layering seams.
- Cool and unmold. Let sticks cool fully at room temperature — rushing this in a fridge can cause cracking from uneven contraction — then unmold or peel the liner away.
- Label immediately. Once several colors are drying at once, an unlabeled stick is a mystery pigment. Note the pigment name and your oil-to-wax ratio while you still remember it.
Getting the ratio right
There is no single correct ratio, because pigments differ enormously in how much oil they absorb before turning into a workable paste — an earth pigment like raw umber needs far less oil than a fine synthetic like a phthalo blue. Work in two stages instead of guessing a fixed recipe: first bring the dry pigment to a smooth paste using only as much oil as it needs, then combine that paste with melted wax roughly one-to-one by volume as a starting point.
More wax relative to paste gives a firmer, more crayon-like stick that holds a point; more oil-paste relative to wax gives a softer stick closer to a true paint feel, but one that smears and softens more in a warm hand. Adjust from there and write down what worked — this is exactly the kind of thing that is easy to forget between batches and impossible to reverse-engineer from a finished stick.
Curing and storage
The wax sets within minutes, so a stick is technically usable right away, but the oil inside is still curing through oxidation for weeks afterward — the same slow chemistry behind any oil paint drying. Expect a freshly cast stick to be noticeably softer than it will be a month later. Store finished sticks somewhere cool; a warm studio or a sunny windowsill will soften wax-bound sticks the same way it softens a bar of chocolate.

It depends on the pigment's oil absorption. Bring dry pigment to a smooth paste with only as much oil as it needs, then mix that paste roughly one-to-one with melted beeswax and adjust from there.
Can I use a different wax instead of beeswax?
Beeswax is the standard for good reason — forgiving and low-odor. A small amount of a harder wax like carnauba can raise the melting point, but beeswax should still dominate the mix or the stick turns brittle.
