Oil and cold wax painting: a practical guide
Cold wax medium turns oil paint into something you build and carve rather than just brush — muted color, heavy texture, a matte surface. Here is how the material actually behaves and how to work with it.

I paint in oil and cold wax. It is the medium that made the most sense once I stopped trying to plan a painting in advance and started letting the surface tell me what it needed — pushed on, scraped back, rebuilt. Cold wax rewards that kind of process because it holds a mark instead of blending it away, and it lets you take material off almost as easily as you put it on.

What cold wax medium actually is
Cold wax medium is a soft paste, roughly the consistency of firm butter, made from purified beeswax, a small amount of damar or alkyd resin for hardness, and a solvent — traditionally odorless mineral spirits — that keeps it workable at room temperature. Mixed brand-name products (Dorland's and Gamblin's cold wax medium are the two most common) are formulated so you can fold them directly into tube oil paint with a palette knife.
Unlike encaustic, nothing here is heated. The wax stays soft because of the solvent, not because of temperature, which is the entire reason cold wax can be applied with knives, squeegees, and rags straight off the palette rather than a heated tool.
Mixing ratios
There is no single correct ratio — it depends on how stiff or fluid you want the paint to be — but a useful starting range is:
- 1 part wax medium to 3 parts oil paint — a looser mix, closer to regular oil paint, good for underpainting and thin passages.
- 1 part wax medium to 1 part oil paint — a workable middle ground for most knife application and texture-building.
- 2–3 parts wax medium to 1 part oil paint — a stiff, buttery mix for heavy texture, ridges, and impasto that holds its shape.
Mix on a palette with a knife until the color is even, then apply immediately — cold wax mixtures stiffen as the solvent evaporates, usually within 15–30 minutes depending on the room.
Tools for building texture
Brushes are almost beside the point in cold wax work. The tools that define the medium are the ones that push, drag, and remove material:
- Palette knives — for laying on and scraping back thick passages; different blade shapes give different mark quality.
- Silicone color shapers and squeegees — for dragging a layer thin and even, or pulling color off a raised ridge to expose what is underneath.
- Plastic wrap and freezer paper — pressed into wet wax and peeled away, they leave organic, cracked, or webbed textures that are hard to get any other way.
- Combs, stamps, and carved erasers — dragged or pressed through a workable layer for repeatable pattern.
- A stiff bristle or fan brush — mainly for the first thin layer or for softening an edge before it stiffens.
The core technique: layer, scrape, reveal
Most cold wax paintings are built the same general way regardless of subject:
- Apply a thin first layer of color across the surface and let it stiffen slightly — not fully dry, just past wet.
- Add a second, contrasting layer of color over sections of the first.
- Scrape back through the top layer with a knife, squeegee, or cloth while it is still workable, letting the layer underneath show through in places.
- Repeat — add, scrape, add again — building depth from what gets revealed rather than painting a final image directly.
- Stop earlier than feels natural. Cold wax surfaces read as more finished once cured than they look while wet.
This subtractive rhythm — put down, take away, put down again — is what gives cold wax paintings their layered, weathered quality. The history of the earlier layers stays visible in a way that is difficult to fake by painting it in directly.
Color mixing with cold wax
Wax medium mutes color. A cadmium red that reads bright straight from the tube goes noticeably softer and chalkier once cut with cold wax, because the wax scatters light across the matte surface instead of letting it reflect cleanly like a glossy oil film does. Expect to use more pigment than you would in straight oil painting to hit the same intensity, and expect your palette to trend toward the muted, dusty range even when you are not trying for it. Painters who want to keep some saturated passages often reserve small unmixed dabs of pure pigment for the final layer, applied thin, so the wax has less chance to knock the color back.
Substrate: work on panel, not canvas
A heavily built-up cold wax surface is rigid once cured, and rigid material cracks on a surface that can flex. Stretched canvas moves — with temperature, humidity, and handling — and thick wax passages will eventually craze or lift where the canvas gives. Cradled wood panel, MDF, or hardboard sealed with a stable ground is the standard substrate for serious cold wax work. Thin, restrained cold wax applications can survive on canvas, but if your plan involves real texture, build on panel from the start.
Drying, curing, and safety
Cold wax makes the surface touch-dry faster than plain oil paint — often within a day or two for moderate layers — because the solvent evaporates quickly and the wax content firms up the surface. That is not the same as cured. The oil underneath is still oxidizing and hardening for weeks to months depending on layer thickness, and a painting can look and feel done long before it actually is. Handle, ship, or frame accordingly.
Odorless mineral spirits are lower-odor, not fume-free. Work with a window open or a fan running, keep the lid on your solvent jar between uses, and avoid working in a small closed room for extended sessions.
Finishing: most cold wax paintings are never varnished
The matte, slightly absorbent finish is usually the point, not a problem to fix. Once a painting is fully cured, many painters buff the surface lightly with a soft, lint-free cloth to bring up a subtle sheen without changing the matte character. If you do want a varnish, use one made for oil paintings and wait until the piece is genuinely cured — sealing an uncured oil and wax surface traps solvent and slows curing further.
Common beginner mistakes
- ✓ Mixing wax medium into every layer at the same ratio, which flattens the texture instead of building contrast between thick and thin passages.
