Cold wax vs. encaustic vs. oil — which medium should you use?
All three are wax- or oil-based, and it is easy to confuse cold wax with encaustic since both build heavy texture. Here is what actually separates them, side by side.

The one-line distinction
Traditional oil is applied wet and stays workable for a long time — its strength is blending and subtle transitions. Cold wax is oil paint stiffened with a solvent-based wax paste, applied with knives and tools instead of brushes, and it stiffens fast — its strength is texture and layered scraping at room temperature. Encaustic is pure molten wax and pigment, kept liquid with heat and fused layer by layer — its strength is depth, translucency, and the ability to carve or embed material into the surface.
